INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVMENTS

Strong infrastructure is critical to Gardner’s growth, safety, and resilience. Through strategic planning and successful grant funding, Mayor Nicholson and his team have made significant improvements across the city in recent years.
Upgrading Our Water System
A major achievement was the completion of a new water transmission main line, funded by a $1 million grant. This critical pipeline connects the Crystal Lake Reservoir Treatment Plant to storage tanks on James Street, serving as the primary water source for the entire city.
In addition, millions of dollars in local investment over the past four years have reduced water loss by 80 million gallons annually — the equivalent of 40 extra days of water supply remaining in Crystal Lake. These improvements strengthen our system, protect against drought conditions, and support future development.
Additional Infrastructure Investments
We have leveraged grant funding to complete or begin several key projects, including:
-
Construction of a new salt shed for winter weather preparedness
-
Full reconstruction of the runway and taxiways at Gardner Municipal Airport
-
A downtown parking development study to plan for anticipated commercial and housing growth
-
Expansion of bicycle infrastructure for safer, more accessible transportation options
Public Safety Equipment Upgrades
Thanks to critical support from state and federal funding, Gardner has made significant investments in strengthening our emergency response capabilities. This includes the purchase of a new ambulance, a state-of-the-art fire engine and ladder truck, and a heavy rescue vehicle — all essential assets that will enhance the safety and well-being of our residents for years to come.
Accountability and Process Reforms
Following challenges observed in the Maki Park project, the city is implementing reforms to improve interdepartmental communication, project oversight, and committee structures. These updates will ensure that future projects move forward efficiently and without delays.
Looking Ahead
These improvements not only enhance public safety and reliability but also position Gardner for continued growth and resilience in the face of climate change and infrastructure challenges. Mayor Nicholson remains committed to building a stronger, more sustainable foundation for the future.
